SOUTH KOREA and Taiwan (once called Formosa) are to restore direct flights which were suspended when the Koreans broke off diplomatic ties with the island in 1992 due to its recognition of the Chinese Republic. For the last 12 years travellers between Taipei and Seoul had to fly via third countries. The whole arrangement is mixed up with political shenanigans as flights between Hong Kong and Taipei have been operating for some time, and there are now direct services between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. In 2002, the two sides agreed to allow chartered flights, but the irregular services have been unable to meet growing demand.
