SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS is not for sale according to reports from Johannesburg The South African government has no plans to sell despite it posting a record pre-tax loss. The government owns 95% of SAA with employees holding the balance. Reporting to a parliamentary committee public enterprises minister Alec Erwin said that there was no logic in trying to sell SAA to another operator. Over the last financial year the airline suffered a US$1.33bn loss with currency fluctuations a leading factor. It is presently in a major fleet renewal programme re-equipping with 41 new Airbus aircraft over the next ten years (see ABTN 10 February 2004).
