SINGLE ENGINE AIRCRAFT with fare paying passengers could become legal next year in the UK if, as expected, the European Joint Aviation Authority (JAA) approve legislation now going through. Currently these are banned except in virtually perfect weather conditions although this type of operation is allowed in the USA. Air taxi companies have long argued that the modern turbine is far more reliable than the old piston engine, as demonstrated (albeit in a somewhat larger machine) with the twin engine Boeing 777 which daily operates 15-hour non-stop sectors. This move will open up the market for such aircraft as the Cessa Caravan, Pilatus PC-12 and Socata TBM 700.
