SINGAPORE-CHANGI will open in March as a "Budget Terminal", not the world”s first purpose-built structure of its type (that distinction probably held by the Ryanair satellite at Stansted), nevertheless an innovative move by one of the world's most forward thinking of airport operators.
Tiger Airways will be the first carrier to move into the two adjacent single-storey buildings used for departure and arrival. Passengers will be bussed from the main terminal area and there are no travellators, escalators or air bridges. Passenger handling charges at the terminal will be less than half that of the main (and grandiose) terminal. Security costs will be the same. The 25,000 sqm of buildings will initially be able to handle about 2.7m passengers a year.
