SINGAPORE AIRLINES is to join the budget carrier club in the second half of next year with the setting up of Tiger Airways in which it will have a 49% stake. Intriguingly Tony Ryan and his family are also investors in the new unit started by former Ryanair ground operations director Charlie Clifton. The move is seen as a counterweight to AirAsia the successful (and profitable) Malaysian discount operator which was launched in 2001 and is expected to have up to 20 Boeing 737s in operation by the time Tiger Airways comes on line.
