KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has issued some dramatic figures which show just how quickly self-service check-in (SSCI) is becoming the norm. Last week 54% of its passengers departing from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol used the electronic system compared with only 13% this time last year. Given the latest online check-in options now available, long waiting times at the desks are beginning to become a thing of the past. At the start of this year, specially installed baggage drop-off points were officially taken into operation in departure hall 2 at Schiphol and the number of SSCI machines increased significantly. Within a timeframe of 30 hours prior to departure, passengers travelling on an e-ticket also have the option of checking themselves online, selecting a seat and printing out their own boarding pass.
