AMSTERDAM AIRPORT SCHIPHOL is to showcase van Gogh in its unique Rijksmuseum following the recent success of the Rembrandt exhibition. Schiphol is the only airport in the world to have its own art museum, which is open free of charge to all passengers. The exhibition will run from 9 January to 18 April 2004 with his famous Self-Portrait, painted in Paris in 1887, the centrepiece. In the painting, van Gogh wears a grey felt hat and is dressed respectably in a smart suit and tie. The piece will be accompanied by seven paintings by renowned Dutch contemporaries of van Gogh including works by Breitner, Isra”ls, Toorop, Witsen and Bauer. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol is located inside the airport terminal, after passport control, on Holland Boulevard in the corridor connecting Piers E and F. The museum is open daily from 0700 to 2000 with works by famous masters of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Jacob van Ruisdael, Ferdinand Bol and Jan Steen, permanently on view.
