SALLY B, a film star (and here as Memphis Belle), and the last airworthy B17 left in the UK, is to fly again in this summer”s celebrations of the end of World War II, courtesy of Virgin Atlantic Airways. The Gatwick - based airline is to cover the costs of the aircraft”s liability insurance to enable her to continue flying for the next three months. Due to new EU regulations the indemnity required by the aircraft has rocketed, effectively grounding the old lady. Supporters feared that as a result, she would not be able to appear at a number of flying events in the coming months, including her appearance at the 60th anniversary of the end of the war at Buckingham Palace. Sally B is permanently based at the Imperial War Museum Duxford where she is also on static display.
