RYANAIR has opened a new maintenance facility at Glasgow's Prestwick International Airport at a special ceremony, which was attended by the UK's Secretary for State and Transport, the Rt Hon Alistair Darling. The 4,000 square metres facility, which has been developed in partnership with The Scottish Executive, will be Ryanair's principal aircraft service centre outside Ireland, and will employ up to 200 people over the next 5 years. Ryanair will also expand its support facilities at Skavsta Airport in Nykoping, Sweden. The Irish airline has contracted leading Space Frame technology company, CoStruct to provide a covered maintenance facility to enable work to be carried out on aircraft during the harsh Swedish winters when temperatures regularly drop to 15 degrees below. The facility will be capable of housing a single Boeing 737 and is due to be opened by late October.
