ROBIN HOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT has come about, but in the most unexpected way, a move bound to upset the natives of Nottingham 60 miles to the south. Let us hope that ”king” Richard does not bring in Virgin Atlantic which might actually cause an uprising. ”Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield” is the official new name for the ”80m development that is transforming the former Finningley RAF base into a brand new ”personality” airport with the capacity for 2.3m passengers annually. The first flights are expected to take off in Spring 2005. The 900-acre airport and business zone site is owned by Peel Airports Ltd, the company which also operates Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Teesside International Airport where a possible name change to Shearer International would cause even more controversy. According to the airport Robin Hood is known to have spent much of his life around the Doncaster area (possibly disguised as Kevin Costner) and that in any event Loxley is near Sheffield.
