SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT has celebrated the tenth anniversary of its purpose-built terminal with news of record figures. Passenger growth has been at an all time high, with 1.52m passengers using the airport in the year ending 31 October 2004, up 34.4% on the previous year. The airport now offers 39 destinations served by 16 scheduled and charter operators, together with executive jet services by resident Club328. Most recent newcomer is German budget carrier Air Berlin with three weekly flights to Paderborn. The airline says that it is the first of several services to Germany complementing its sizeable operation at BAA-owned Stansted. The airport says that the much criticised railway interchange (Southampton Parkway, sitting alongside the terminal, suffers a rudimentary pedestrian bridge at the wrong end of the platform) is to be much improved with high level access to the landside passenger area.
