QATAR AIRWAYS was the only actual airline investing in a chalet at Farnborough, the Doha based operator taking the opportunity of inviting useful contacts to learn more about the carrier, its soon to be developed hub airport, and of course Qatar as a destination. Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker confirmed that a route to Osaka would start on 8 December, and to Johannesburg on 15 January. No firm date has been fixed for the introduction of the much-heralded Melbourne service, but is expected soon after the New Year. Also due next year, but no date yet fixed either, are non-stop flights to New York. Mr Al Baker points out that whilst passenger numbers grow dramatically, 4.5m expected this year, the connecting traffic still remains around 60%, Doha and Qatar itself gaining more and more popularity. Qatar Airways is now profitable. In a significant move the airline has changed its Moscow operation to the fast growing Domodedovo airport where it joins Air Malta, British Airways, Germania, Egypt Air, Emirates, Karthago, SN Brussels Airlines, Swiss Air and Vietnam Airlines. The airline codeshares with Aeroflot.
