BELFAST CITY AIRPORT sale by Bombardier is moving ahead, but tenders, which should have been with the Canadian owners by last Friday, have been extended by two weeks. Amongst those bidding is thought to be TBI, owners of Belfast International Airport, who if successful would probably be challenged by the competition authorities.
There is an argument whether Belfast can sustain two full service airports.
Just two miles from the city centre, and formerly Short Brothers private airfield, Belfast Harbour Airport became a scheduled service operation in the late 1980”s following the opening of London City.
It has been extensively developed since that time and now has one of the most modern terminals in the country.
With British Midland moving the majority of its Heathrow services to the airport a 1.8m passenger throughput is expected in 2002.
