NORTHWEST AIRLINES fear a 20 August strike by mechanics, cleaners and custodians, after its representatives refused to move beyond 'unacceptable' demands in a last-ditch negotiating session, called by the National Mediation Board. Unions say the airline was not prepared to negotiate and Northwest repeated its previous demand, that would require union members to approve a contract in which 53% of them would lose their jobs. Other demands already deemed non-acceptable by unions include pay cuts for remaining employees of 25-26%, along with other major concessions.
