BREAKING NEWS is that Northwest Airlines continues to operate its early-fall flight schedule despite a strike by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA). It says it had a normal operations day on Saturday and expected the same on Sunday, typically one of the busiest travel days of the week. Reports in US newspapers seem to confirm flights getting away on time. This is the first US airline strike since 2001, Northwest outsourcing licensed mechanics to maintain schedules. None of the other airline unions are involved. Travellers expecting to use Northwest should keep their eye on the airline”s website in a dispute that could easily run and run.
