NIGERIA is still looking at ways of getting back onto the international air transport map following the collapse of Nigeria Airways in May of last year. Known to be in discussions are South African Airways (SAA) and Virgin Atlantic. SAA already has a substantial shareholding in Air Tanzania, whilst Virgin flies daily to the commercial centre of Lagos from Heathrow (as does British Airways). Any overseas backer of a new operation would hold 49%, the balance coming from Nigerian institutional investors and public. New York would be a target destination for the new airline. Virgin is thought to have opened bilateral talks in Washington.
