NEWCASTLE AIRPORT”S new ”7m terminal extension is now fully operational. The impressive glass and steel structure, which adds an additional 3,000 square metres of space to the existing terminal building, is part of a wider redevelopment programme to greatly improve the quality and range of facilities offered to passengers. In direct response to consumer demand for a greater choice of catering, retail and leisure options, a diverse range of high street retailers has been included in the project. An extensive selection of eateries can be found in the new 'Food Village', alongside Burger King, Bar des Voyageurs, Caff” Ritazza and Mihoko, a restaurant serving healthy oriental food. In addition, a host of high street retailers including Tie Rack, Boots, Redland (formerly Salisburys) and WH Smith have opened new stores on site. a new tax- and duty-free mini department store operated by Alpha Retail, and a tax-free Dixons. There is a 'Kids Zone'. An Internet Lounge, said to be the largest such facility at a UK airport, has also opened. Annual Passengers levels at Newcastle are expected to reach 5m by the end 2004 and 10m double by 2016.
