LUTON AIRPORT is to be connected from Wednesday 19 May to Katowice, the capital of Poland's industrial heartland of Upper Silesia, by the new European budget airline Wizz Air. The daily flights will be flown by 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. This will be the first ever direct service from Katowice to London, the current alternative via Warsaw or a number of European points. Katowice is one of Poland's main industrial and mining centres and is an area of major regeneration and investment. Upper Silesia is a province with a long and fascinating history having been variously disputed by the Russian, Austro Hungarian and Prussian empires. Poland joins the EU on 1 May.
