RE-BRANDING is definitely the in thing as far as airports are
concerned. What initially was considered as a tribute to great people
of history (typically JFK & CDG) has been turned into a farce and
political point. Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield at Finningley did not
help and questions have been raised about John Lennon Liverpool. Now
we have the one time Jan Smuts which changed its name to Johannesburg
International in 1994, making sense, and is now wanting to be called
Oliver Tambo, which has upset the South African opposition parties.
In any event IATA will continue to call it JNB, just as Mumbai is BOM
and Nottingham EMA.
