HAPAG-LLOYD EXPRESS, the German low-cost airline, is to launch a new route linking Edinburgh with Hamburg in what it describes as a major development which forms part of its increasing investment in the UK and Ireland.
The service starts on Sunday December 5, giving the Scottish capital a high-frequency link to one of Germany's key gateways for tourism and business. There will be three return flights each week with fares from ”13.99 each way. BAA Scotland is supporting the new route through its ”95 million Route Development Fund. Edinburgh Airport managing director Richard Jeffrey said the new service was another success for the fund, which was established to secure more services for the airport.
HLX is also launching new routes next summer from Newcastle to Germany, adding Cologne/Bonn and Munich alongside Hanover. The well-established Manchester routes to Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart, and Dublin's links to Hamburg and Stuttgart, will continue. The TUI Group airline will also boost capacity for summer 2005 by adding four aircraft to its fleet, bringing the total to 15.
Hamburg is Germany's second largest city, a major commercial centre and a cosmopolitan port. An independent city state, it is the gateway to Lower Saxony and Bremen for tourism and business. It offers a wide variety of architecture and cultural attractions, attractive parks and lakes, and a well-known nightlife centred on the world-famous Reeperbahn. Hamburg also has excellent links to the rest of Germany, including the renowned Deutsche-Bahn rail network, whose high-speed ICE trains also serve the transportation hubs of Hanover and Stuttgart.
