MESABA, a major mid-west regional carrier, has become the first airline to suffer knock-on effects following the bankruptcy of Northwest filing itself for chapter 11. The airline currently has a fleet of over 60 Saab 340 turboprops and 35 Avro RJs. In a dramatic cut down of the Northwest Airlink, ten of the Saabs will be taken out of service at the end of the year and the entire Avro fleet could be withdrawn. Nine of the RJ85s were due to go at the end of the summer season in any event.
