MELBOURNE is in the news celebrating the arrival of non-stop Emirates flights from Dubai (with connections to the UK) initially operating three times a week and doubling to six times weekly on 16 August. Long forgotten, but Melbourne was Emirates first Australian destination back in 1996, the route now daily via Singapore. The airline also serves Sydney, Perth and Brisbane with daily flights. The new service goes on to Christchurch in New Zealand, a new destination for the carrier. Emirates flies its ultra long-haul Airbus A340-500 aircraft on the route. Also in the capital of Victoria last week was Akbar Al Baker, CEO Qatar Airways. Mr Al Baker met Australian Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson and confirmed that the airline would be introducing non-stop services from Doha by the year”s end.
