MAERSK AIR has been taken over by the same Icelandic group that acquired Sterling, the Copenhagen-based airline in March of this year. Called Fons Eignarhaldsfelag (”Fons”) they are also the owners of Iceland Express. Maersk Air was established by the Danish shipping organisation in 1970 and has for many years operated successful UK services serving Copenhagen from both Gatwick and Manchester and also Billund from Gatwick. No changes are expected in the short term although it is the Sterling policy to concentrate on budget style operations. As things stand the combined company will be eventually branded as Sterling.
