MAERSK AIR, part of the mighty Danish AP Moeller empire, has concluded an agreement with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) to sell its 49% of the share capital in Estonian Air. The Copenhagen-based airline has been a shareholder in Estonian Air since the privatisation of the national carrier in 1996. Chief executive of the airline for the last two years was Joern Eriksen, former MD of Birmingham-based Maersk Air (UK) Ltd (now Duo). Joern has now returned to Copenhagen leaving an Estonian in charge, Erki Urva, an experienced executive from the travel industry. Estonian Air is a profitable and well-run airline operating 11 international routes, with more than 300 employees and a fleet of four Boeing 737-500 aircraft. Estonian Air will fit neatly into the SAS network and not affect other activities of Maersk Air.
