MAASTRICHT AACHEN, the small regional airport halfway between Brussels and Cologne, has a new majority shareholder Omniport the specialist airport company created in 2001. In a deal announced last week Omniport has initially acquired 70% of the share capital of MAA from the Province of Limburg and the Dutch State. Its partner is the Dutch construction company Dura Vermeer. Including the new funding from Omniport, MAA has approximately E40m in cash available for future investment in the infrastructure of the airport. There are also plans to create a business park adjacent to the airport. Following the sale of its share in Prestwick Airport Omniport acquired a controlling interest in Norwich Airport earlier this year. In 2003 Maastricht Aachen handled 270,000 passengers and 53,000 tonnes of freight. The single main runway is 2500m long.
