RYANAIR is to charge passengers for luggage, ”5 if not on the original booking where the cost is ”2.50. Within 24 hours of the announcement FlyBe came up with a similar, but cheaper, charging system, ”4 and ”2. Ryanair is also following the trend with an internet-based check-in system and its baggage allowance up to the industry standard comprising 10kgs carry-on and 20kgs checked-in luggage. However smart (and experienced) customers have been known not to bring all their cabin baggage up to the check-in, and therefore not making the 10kg limit. Ryanair”s press release also spoke of a 9% reduction on fares but, since they don”t publish fares as such, this is impossible to verify. However some of the news media did report it. The idea to charge for baggage is a clever innovation in helping to keep basic fares down but it might backfire with more cabin luggage.
