LUFTHANSA is further extending its network of flights to the Ukraine, bringing this region, bordering the Black Sea, closer to Europe. Two cities, hitherto without easy flights from London, will be linked through Frankfurt and Munich. Donetsk comes on line from Munich with six weekly flights from 11 September and Dnipropetrovsk for the start of the winter timetable on 30 October, also six times per week. Donetsk is a mining city far to the east whose original development is credited to a Welshman called John Hughes in the 1860s. Dnipropetrovsk, with a population of just over one million, is a major traffic junction and one of the most important industrial cities in the Ukraine.
