LUFTHANSA has made what is claimed to be the world”s first broadband email transmission from a scheduled aircraft to a land station. The Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 christened ”Sachsen-Anhalt” was on a flight from Frankfurt to Washington. Using Connexion by Boeing the flying online-office has taken a major step closer to reality. Early next year British Airways will experimentally fit a similar kit on a 747 used on the Heathrow ” New York service and Lufthansa will offer ”FlyNet” on the Washington route. Back in July ABTN exchanged messages with Connexion by Boeing president Scott Carson when he was airborne in the Boeing demonstrator 737. Within two years such communications are expected to become standard practice at very affordable prices.
