To mark its 30th anniversary today (October 26), London City airport has unveiled new artist’s impressions of what the hub will look like when it completes a £400 million development.
The project is due for completion in 2021 and is based on increasing runway and terminal capacity to match the projected increased in passengers, which the airport believes could be as high as two million more passengers a year by 2025. It hit a record 4.6 million passengers in 2016. London City will be the first UK airport to install a digital air traffic control tower, which is due to be operational in 2019.
The airport’s terminal is set to increase in size by around 40,000 sqm, with construction set to begin in early 2018. London City says the expansion of the main building and its runway will support an additional 30,000 flights per year and will generate an extra £750 million for the UK economy.
London City has opened a free exhibition on Jubilee Walk in Canary Wharf to display the seven new CGI images of the project, as well as 52 pictures that demonstrate the changes in the airport since it opened in 1987. The exhibition closes on November 7.
