LONDON CITY AIRPORT has awarded the contract for the construction of a holding point at the eastern end of its single runway to John Mowlem & Company Plc, the builders of the airport in the 1980s.
Covering some 4,500 sq m and supported by up to 70 piles the holding area will enable four aircraft to taxi out onto the runway at any one time, one positioning for take-off clearance, with the other three waiting in the holding area for take off-clearance.
Originally thought to have an maximum of 15 aircraft movements per hour, LCY will now be targeting up to 50 movements in 60 minutes.
Work is expected to start straight into the new year and take just nine months.
