HELIOS AIRWAYS has been acquired by the Libra Holidays Group who recently sold its own airline Excel Airways to the Icelandic company Avion, the renamed Air Atlanta Aviation Group (from 1 January 2005 ” see ABTN 25 October). The decision to acquire the airline was taken by LHG as it expands its operation into the scheduled airline market, utilising Cyprus as its centre. Helios Airways currently operates mainly scheduled services from the UK and Ireland to Cyprus and charter flights from Bristol, Newcastle and Humberside, with the very recent addition of a service from Birmingham. Coinciding with the full membership of Cyprus to the EU on 1 May 2004, the airline introduced scheduled flights from Heathrow.
