Dutch carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is expected to start a fuel pricing war. In response to decreasing oil prices, the airline is reducing its fuel surcharge by ”3 ($5.60) per sector on all intercontinental flights and ”1 ($1.90) per sector on all intra-European services.
On a long haul return flight from the UK via Amsterdam the saving per passenger is ”8 ($15). KLM says that it is the airline's policy to adjust its fuel surcharges if the oil barrel price rises above or drops below a certain level for more than 30 consecutive days.
The European change is minimal and owner Air France has not followed suit. However the move will highlight in the public's perception of the charges levelled by some carriers.
