JETSTAR ASIA & VALUAIR, both based in Singapore, are to amalgamate but at the same time continue with separate identities, with former Qantas executive Keith Ryan (and Jetstar Asia CEO), heading up the merged business. Jetstar Asia is very much a Qantas driven airline but not directly connected with the Australian budget carrier with a similar name. It is a Singapore-based partnership between Qantas (49%), local businessmen Tony Chew (22%), and FF Wong (10%), and Temasek Holdings (19%). Introduced late last year Jetstar Asia flies from Singapore to India, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Manila and Taipei, while Valuair destinations are Singapore to Hong Kong, Bangkok Jakarta and Perth. Both airlines are said to have struggled over the last few months and clearly there will be some route pruning. The South East Asia market also includes rival low cost carriers AirAsia and SIA affiliate Tiger Airways, each requiring (and not always getting), route licences from the governments concerned.
