JERSEY & SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORTS last week celebrated the oldest continuous air link in the UK, the route initially started back on 29 March 1934, a de Havilland Rapide the pioneering aircraft.
Currently the service is flown four times daily by FlyBE, who also use an aircraft that once had a de Havilland name, the BAe 146.
The guests for the celebrations included Brian Walters, for 20 years the senior Brit in Lufthansa”s London office, now better known as an aviation journalist, and as a pre-war baby a passenger to Jersey in his mother”s arms. And he has a photo to prove it.
With the route history and the site of the first ever Spitfire flight in 1936 Southampton can lay claim to the honour of being Britain”s most historic airport.
A Spitfire casting was recently placed at the entranceway to Southampton Airport.
