Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced that it will establish a new low-cost subsidiary for the international market.
According to the airline’s 2017-2020 management plan, the low-cost carrier (LCC) will operate medium and long-haul flights to and from Japan, with the business set to be based at Narita International airport.
JAL says the new subsidiary could be established as early as this July and will utilise B787-8s to fly to international destinations in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Services could launch in the summer of 2020, when Narita airport plans to complete enhancements to its facilities.
The airline group already invests in Jetstar Japan, of which it owns a third. When the new carrier is established, it will compete with All Nippon Airways’ Peach Aviation and Vanilla Air.
