INDEPENDENCE AIR, also known as FLYi and previously Atlantic Coast Airlines, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the latest in a torrent of US carriers ”enjoying the protection of being able to continue flying while attempting to sort out their finances”, as noted by Sir Richard Branson in last week”s issue of ABTN. Brazenly the airline on its website talks proudly of other American airlines also trading in bankruptcy as if it is the thing to do! FLYi, based at Washington Dulles airport, currently operates approximately 220 daily departures to 36 destinations with a fleet of Bombardier CRJs.
