IBERIA is to close its regional hub in Miami and relocate the four Airbus A319s that have been stationed at the airport. Miami has been a major transit point for passengers travelling between Europe, Central America and the Caribbean for many years. However the enhanced US security arrangements have slowed transit so much that the operation was becoming less and less practical with delays and passengers missing connecting aircraft. The airline is however underlining its commitment to Latin America, as the leading European carrier serving the region, with the launch tomorrow of thrice-weekly Airbus A340s to Montevideo, providing the only non-stops between the Uruguayan capital and Europe. With new services to Guatemala and Panama, it takes the number of destinations it serves non-stop in the region to 17.
