HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS AIRPORTS, who operate 10 airports in the far north of the UK under a mandate from the Scottish Executive, reports an 8% growth in the year ended 31 March to 933,779 passengers. Passenger figures for the next 12 months should top 1m for the first time with the very recent introduction of BMI services from Inverness to Heathrow, and by Snowflake to Stockholm. Half the passengers came though Inverness, which now is served from three London airports, Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton. Tiny Tirree (see left), saw a throughput of just 5,500 passengers last year.
