Heathrow airport has reported a record high number of passengers, with figures hitting 77 million in the last 12 months for the first time in its history.
The airport saw 6.76 million passengers in June, an increase of 2.3 per cent from the same month last year. It also hit a daily record of 259,917 travellers flying through the hub on June 30, which it says is the busiest day ever.
Passengers travelling to long-haul destinations in the Middle East and East Asia increased by almost ten per cent and more than five per cent respectively. Heathrow says carriers are helping the growth by using larger aircraft and increasing their load factors. Meanwhile, domestic airline Flybe flew 22,000 more passengers to Scotland.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said at the Conservative party conference this month that the government fully supports expansion at Heathrow and aims to give the go-ahead on a third runway for the airport early next year. In addition, the airport has reached an agreement with the Department of Transportation and Transport for London to bring Elizabeth Line services to Terminal 5 from 2019.
