GULF AIR president and chief executive Australian James Hogan was in town last week to speak to the Aviation Club announcing a new non-stop daily service to Oman from Heathrow which starts on 21 June. The former bmi chief operating officer took up the appointment in May 2003 and quickly established a three-year plan ”Project Falcon” to at least break even. He says that it is on schedule. As part of the revitalisation of the 50-year old airline Gulf Air just 12 months ago introduced Gulf Traveller. Whilst not a budget airline in the accepted sense it is nevertheless a product tailored to the needs of the Gulf region, one class Boeing 767s featuring catering and entertainment more suited to the majority of customers, those originating from the Indian sub-continent. The airline currently operates nine Airbus A340, six A330, seven Boeing 767 and 11 Airbus A320. A board meeting later in June will establish future aircraft requirements but the Airbus A380 has been ruled out. Hogan envisages a fleet of between 50 and 60 aircraft by 2010.
