EU lawmakers passed legislation last week which guarantees compensation for overbooked passengers. It will come into effect in 2005. Levels have been set at EUR600 (USD743) for flights over 3,500 km, EUR400 (USD495) between 1,500 and 3,500 km and EUR250 (USD310) for shorter trips. Travellers have the choice between reimbursement and an alternative flight and meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation. Cancellations will also involve compensation, unless the passenger is informed two weeks ahead or is told in due time and re-routed at a time near the original flight (whatever that means). In the main the so-called budget operators will not be affected as they do not overbook, but where it comes to cancelling and delays, with revenue levels very low, the cost of meals and accommodation will necessitate a careful look at pricing levels. http://europa.eu.int
