The global airline industry improved across all key safety metrics in 2019, according to the International Air Transport Association's annual safety report.
Last year, the industry—including passenger and cargo flights—had 53 total accidents, down from 62 in 2018 and below the 2014-2018 average of 63.2. Eight of the accidents last year were fatal—four on jets and four on turboprop aircraft—with a total of 240 fatalities, down from 11 accidents and 523 fatalities in 2018. The fatality risk for flying In 2019 was 0.09 fatalities per one million flights, about half of what it was in 2018 and for the 2014-2018 average. That number is the equivalent of a passenger taking a flight daily for 535 years before experiencing an accident with a fatality, according to IATA director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac.
