BERLIN BRANDENBURG is on again as the new airline gateway to the German capital. The authorities have finally given the green light for the development of the existing Schonefeld airport in the former eastern sector as the city”s main airport. Work should have started two years ago on the project but problems ensued with the developers and funding. Bids for the main parts of the project will now be invited with a view to construction beginning in 2006 and the new airport opening in 2010. Currently easyJet is the largest user of Schonefeld which already has a good rail link to downtown Berlin. As things stand the old, centrally located, airport at Tempelhof is due to close at the end of October leaving Tegel as Berlin”s main airport for the next few years.
