ALITALIA experienced yet another strike on Saturday and trade unions are calling for further action in the lead up to the Winter Olympics. A strike by flight crews earlier in the week forced the airline to officially cancel 122 flights and called into question the company's restructuring plans. Trade unions voted to extend the strike into Friday and said that the number of cancelled flights was 160, with the Rome ” Milan shuttle much used by businessmen, particularly badly hit. The subject of continued bailouts by the Italian government, together with what other airlines have called ”indulgence” by Brussels, Alitalia continues to lose money, high fuel costs being the latest excuse. Passengers, given the choice, are staying away in droves due to this continued union interference.
