FLY GIBRALTAR will be unveiled at World Travel Market at Excel in
November and expects to start flying next April. The airline it is
the brainchild of Mark Carreras, once with easyJet and now with OEM
(International) Ltd, a Gibraltar-based property company. Mike Lee, a
familiar name in the industry and ex-Airtours and MyTravel, is a
non-executive director. Target destinations are Birmingham, Bristol,
Manchester and Stansted airports, plus Cork and Dublin. It plans to
begin ticketing from October 2006. Initially the airline will operate
two leased Boeing 737-300 aircraft in a one-class configuration
carrying 148 passengers. Gibraltar has no direct air links from
Ireland at present and is served from the UK with flights out of
Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton. 65% to 70% of the passengers currently
flying into Gibraltar cross over to Spain. GB Airways, formally based
in the British overseas territory, is now a BA franchise with its
headquarters in the old Beehive at Gatwick.
