FINNAIR, a member of Oneworld, is in the news for a variety of good reasons all of them to do with its rapidly expanding long haul services across Asia.
The airline has ordered nine Airbus A340-900 aircraft with deliveries from 2011, and in doing so becomes the lead airline for the latest variant of Rolls-Royce Trent series engines, called the 1700. In the meantime it will take delivery of three 340-300 planes in 2007, but this time with CFM 56 powerplants. The airline will begin direct scheduled flights from Helsinki to the new offshore airport at Nagoya in June. Nagoya is Finnair's third scheduled destination in Japan and the ninth in Asia.
