IRAQ will welcome its first services from an established European airline since the fall of Saddam when Austrian commences fights into Erbil in Kurdish Northern Iraq, on Thursday 9 March 2006. These will initially operate twice weekly (Thursday and Sunday) but from 6 April a Tuesday flight will be added. The service is operated by a two-class Airbus A319 departing Vienna 2015, arriving Erbil 0600 the following day. The city of Erbil is considered a safe gateway into Iraq with a population of 1m making it the fourth largest in the country. Erbil is in the developing and expanding economic region of Kurdistan, where a range of international companies are already active. Austrian”s regional office was opened 2 January 2006.
