Emirates has made serious noises that it would like to introduce direct services, either non-stop which would mean a 17/18 hour flight, or via South Africa with fifth freedom operations.
Negotiations are said to be going on with the SA authorities who would appear to be concerned that a similar scenario might emerge to that of Australia/New Zealand where Emirates are allowed to originate passengers at both ends of the Tasman Sea crossing, much to the concern of both Qantas and Air New Zealand.
