EMBRAER has signed an agreement to build a production unit in China through a joint venture with Harbin Aircraft Industry (Group) Co Ltd. and Hafei Aviation Industry Co Ltd ” companies controlled by China Aviation Industry Corp. Embraer”s first industrial initiative outside Brazil will assemble ERJ family aircraft to better meet the needs of the Chinese airlines' market. The delivery of the first aircraft is scheduled for December 2003. Currently there are five ERJ 145s flying in China, operated by Sichuan Airlines.
