Easyjet has launched a new “hands free” service allowing customers to check in their hand luggage at the bag drop desk so they do not have to take it through security and on to the aircraft.
The new option – which is available at all airports where the carrier operates apart from Gatwick – costs £4 per person or £10 for “a group bundle per flight”.
Easyjet has confirmed that the option to go “hands free” can be taken at the airport - rather than during the booking process - with the fee being taken at the bag drop counter.
Passengers will also be given “small plastic bags to carry their essential items” through the airport, and are “free to take onboard any items purchased at the airport”.
They will also be able to board the aircraft “first after those with Speedy Boarding”.
The airline has promised that the hands-free bags will be tagged as priority luggage and will be “among the first to be delivered at the baggage belt” at arrivals.
Easyjet said that the service was trialled in France earlier this year, and “was a big success, with over 9,000 passengers choosing the option in just four weeks”.
This has led to the decision to roll it out across the carrier’s network, with the exception of Gatwick.
Andrew Middleton, ancillary revenue director at Easyjet, said: “We’ve seen a fantastic response from customers upgrading to the hands-free experience and we’re confident once you go hands free you’ll never want to drag cabin baggage through the airport again.”
